Who is eligible to participate in music therapy?

Anyone who enjoys music and wants to use music to cultivate positive change in their lives. All backgrounds, needs, and ages are welcome!

What kind of music is included in sessions?

Your favourite music! Research shows that music therapy is most effective when the client’s preferred music is used in sessions. Therefore, part of the assessment process will include learning about your favourite music!

Will I be making music or just listening to music?

Music therapy experiences can be active (i.e., client and therapist making music together) or passive (i.e., therapist making music and client listening). This will be determined in the assessment phase according to the client’s preferences, needs, strengths, and goals.

Do I need to have musical experience or skills to participate in sessions?
Not at all. Music therapy experiences are designed so that anyone can participate regardless of their previous musical experiences or skills. What makes clients most eligible for music therapy is that they enjoy music and are open to using it in therapy.

Do I need to own an instrument to participate in online music therapy sessions?
It’s helpful but not necessary. Music therapy experiences can be adapted according to the resources that clients already have in their home, even household items can be used to make music.

Is online music therapy effective?
Absolutely! Online music therapy is designed so you can continue meeting your goals while enjoying virtual music experiences in the comfort of your own home. In fact, here are some benefits to online music therapy:

  • Easier access to services
  • Facilitation of generalization (i.e., taking what you have learned in therapy and
applying it in various areas of your life outside of therapy to promote lasting
    change)
  • Sense of safety having sessions in a familiar environment
  • Easier to involve family members in sessions when appropriate
  • Incorporate online music-making tools/software

What is Neurologic Music Therapy (NMT)?

change in the sensorimotor, cognitive, speech and language/communication, and social emotional domains.
