FAQ

How do I make an appointment? Do I need a referral from the Family Doctor?

Harmony Counselling does not require a referral from another professional or family Doctor. To schedule an appointment contact us directly by phone (647) 896-2103 or by e-mail: info@harmonycounselling.ca

Do you have a parent/s intake session first?

Yes, we conduct an intake session with the parents of children and young teens, before the counsellor meets directly with the child. The first session is essential for the parents to know if the therapist will be a good fit to your child and family. Furthermore, the therapist will have the opportunity to collect pertinent information to complete a thorough assessment.

If the teen is over 16 years old an exception could be made and be present at the first session. Teens over 16 years old are considered adults under the Family and Child Act (72) in Ontario, and for that reason, we require their informed consent in counselling.

How long are the sessions? How often would you meet the therapist?

The sessions are 50 minutes long and usually occur once per week. The frequency of the sessions will also depend on the nature or severity of the problem.

How do you do counselling with children or youth?

Therapeutic treatment varies based on the age of the child and the difficulty he/she experiences. Different strategies and tools are used to engage children in therapy and generate positive changes. For instance, we apply Play therapy, Narrative therapy, Sand therapy, CBT programs tailored for children, Art Therapy, Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), among other empirically supported approaches.

What is evidence-based therapy/practice?

Harmony Counselling applies treatment based on science and also called evidence-based practice. This means that we only use therapies or approaches that are based on quality research and have demonstrated treatment efficacy.
